All About Ketamine
Healthcare professionals first began using ketamine as an anesthetic in the 1960s. Ketamine, is still used as an anesthetic, but research has found that it can be effective in treating depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Although Ketamine therapy is administered usually as an intravenous infusion, we at LPG understand that there can be apprehension and anxiety related to an invasive procedure, so here at Loudoun Psychiatry group we offer ketamine therapy that is introduced through nasal spray.
Ketamine works by binding to receptors in the brain that produce a chemical called glutamate. In other words, it helps activate glutamate in your brain.
While experts have yet to determine glutamate’s exact role in depression symptoms, they do know it plays a key role in mood regulation. Low levels of glutamate in your brain may lead to depression symptoms.
Ketamine can also stimulate the production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor. This protein plays a role in neuroplasticity, or your brain’s ability to adapt as you experience new things. By supporting neuroplasticity, ketamine may help change negative thought patterns that contribute to depression.
Another major advantage lies in the fact that Ketamine works very quickly, With traditional antidepressants, it may take weeks before you notice improvement in your symptoms.
Ketamine may offer relief in as little as 1 hour
At Loudoun Psychiatry Group, you will receive your therapy in a comfortable, private room which lasts about two hours. You will be closely monitored by one of our healthcare staff. After your treatment a friend or family member should drive you home, as you still may feel sleepy. Most side effects are temporary, and most people wake up the following morning feeling refreshed — and with a noticeable improvement in mood.
